When it comes to asbestos exposure, you have likely heard some horror stories. Chances are, these stories take place in older buildings and work environments. While these are common locations to find asbestos, they aren’t the only places where this dangerous material may be.

In fact, you may have even been exposed to asbestos and not even know. Asbestos was a “miracle product” that offered many benefits at an affordable price in the past. However, after testing and realizing its dangers, the use of the material was eliminated.

Even though that’s great news, asbestos is still present in all types of buildings, homes and other locations. Knowing some of the most common areas where it is found will help you know if you have been exposed.

Exposure to old buildings

When an older building is destroyed or the structure catches fire, the asbestos inside is burned. Unfortunately, as it is released in the air, it puts anyone at risk of exposure in the vicinity. Along with those nearby when a building is on fire or being taken down, just spending time in a building with asbestos can create exposure concerns.

Asbestos was used for insulating water and steam lines; however, as the wrapping deteriorates, the particles are released, leading to asbestoses exposure cases.

Exposure in the home

Some products that are used in many homes today still contain asbestos. These include things like fire-retardant products, home insulators, floor tiles, gas fireplaces, some plastics and paints, certain adhesive compounds and gas fireplaces.

Your rights after asbestos exposure

If you believe you have been exposed to asbestos, it’s important to learn about your legal options. In many cases, you will be entitled to compensation if symptoms and respiratory issues occur.
